Roccaraso

Roccaraso is the Cortina D'ampezzo of the National Park of Abruzzo!

Roccaraso is an Italian comune of 1,630 inhabitants known to be one of the major tourist resorts of central Italy.

Located at 1236 m of altitude, between the national Park of Abruzzo and the park of Majella, belongs to the area of Alto Sangro, the largest ski area in central Italy that includes the localities of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli, Pescocostanzo, Pescasseroli and Barrea. (Here you can find always updated information on the ski area) The Ski resort of Roccaraso is articulated around Monte Greco (2283 m), the Aremogna Floor and Pizzalto, directly connected to the facilities of the nearby Municipality of Rivisondoli, or Monte Pratello (2012 m). Annually there are numerous competitions and events, also at international level.

The Roccaraso Aremogna Ski Park has 1 gondola lift and 8 chairlifts, 5 ski lift and some nasti for beginners, for a total of about 130 kilometres of downhill runs and over 50 kilometres of cross-country ski runs.

Like the most renowned ski areas in the Dolomites, in Roccaraso you can rent all the necessary equipment for a day on the snow or taste culinary specialities from Abruzzo in the hut. There is the possibility to buy a single ski pass to access the complete area of the Abruzzo National Park that includes the plants of Pescasseroli, Rivisondoli, Pescocostanzo and of course Roccaraso. Among the monuments and places of interest to visit are the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the sixteenth century, and the church of San Rocco, built in 1656. Of particular interest is the medieval village of Pietransieri (hamlet of Roccaraso), once a distinguished country with its own autonomy; Only in 1811 the small village was aggregated to the commune of Roccaraso. Today Pietransieri is sadly known for the Massacre of Limmari (November 21, 1943) in which 128 civilians were killed by the Nazis, including women and children. In memory of this terrible massacre was created a small temple whose walls are covered with tags that bear the name of the fallen.
